Our Story

My Baby Angel Foundation was born out of the pain, shock, and grief we experienced in the pregnancy losses of TWO of our grandchildren. Our granddaughter was born on June 18, 2008 at 22 weeks gestational age. She lived 20 minutes and was too young to survive. Our grandson, born on March 14, 2009 was  stillborn at 24 weeks. The loss was devastating to us and our family.

I (Marika) felt deeply depressed. I had just returned from visiting Nicaragua on March 12, 2009. It was the first time I had ever been in a third world country. While we were there we visited a non-profit that we support. They tutor children from the barrios in Granada and the surrounding area. These children had so little. Clean water, education, healthy nutrition, proper medical care are all compromised severely by the poverty in Nicaragua and many other countries throughout the world. My heart was opened in a new and profound way.

On the way home we stopped at an airport. Our waitress told us that her family had memorialized her deceased grandparents by building a library in Nicaragua. She had gone there to volunteer and was proud to see a plaque with their name on it. We thought about doing something for our granddaughter. Two days later when our grandson came into the world born still, we knew for sure we wanted to create a legacy of love for our deceased grandchildren.  When we told others who had suffered a pregnancy/infant loss, they said “but I want to create a legacy of love for my baby angel too!”
